OC locals represent at the 2012 Battle of the Paddle

OC locals Ron Gossard and Dawn Ehman had impressive 3rd place finishes respectively in their divisions at this years Battle of the Paddle at Doheny State Park in CA. This is quit an accomplishment with over 380 races competing in the Open class race.  The race scene here on Delmarva is just exploding and its great to see two of our own show up strong in the biggest race of the year!

With over 65 paddlers this years Battle on the Bay at Fagers Island in Ocean City, MD turned out to be the best and biggest race on Delmarva. A great time was had by all, congrats to all who participated and the winners of each division. Below are the results of the race.

2nd annual Battle on the Bay Race 8/19/12

OC SUP and Fitness will be hosting the 2nd Annual Battle on the Bay Race on August 19, 2012 at Fager's Island Restaurant at 10am.  All skill levels are welcome. There will be a 6 mile elite race and a 3 mile rec race with divisions for both 14', 12'6, 12', men and women. This really is a fun family event. Details below.

Event Details

Join us for the 2nd Annual Battle on the Bay, the same weekend as the DEW TOUR! This is an event that covers all levels of stand up paddleboarding. It is a full day of racing, eating, and enjoying a wonderful day on the bay at Fager’s Island Bar & Restaurant, 60^th St. & the Bay, Ocean City, MD.Proceeds from the event will go to the PJ Aldridge Cancer Foundation and Carol Kerstetter, a local from Ocean City, that is currently undergoing treatment for cancer.

The day will start off at 10am with a 6 mile ELITE Race and 3 mile FUN Recreational Race at 10 :02am. The course will be decided on race day based on current wind conditions to make it ideal for racers. Weather pending, it will be a flat water race with buoy turns and a great spectators event. Cash and prizes will be awarded to the top 3 finishers in each category. Following the morning race, a DASH FOR CASH SUP RACE-a short sprint race with 1 buoy turn will take place. Followed by a fun short distance KIDS SUP Race.

After all the race will be food, drink and awards. There will also be some local vendors on site!!!

Bring the entire family for a wonderful day of racing, fun, food, & drink.

Where to buy, rent, and learn SUP at the beach in Delaware and Maryland.

Stand up paddle boarding has really taken off here on Delmarva. There are numerous shops and locations to either buy, rent, or take lessons. Here is a list of a few of the places that are highly recommended. This is not a comprehensive list of all the shops in the area, just the ones that we have experience with and that will treat you right.

If you are in the west Ocean City area or downtown OC I highly recommend checking out Walk on Water located at 9808 Stephen Decatur Highway (410-289-8787). Owners Ron Gossard and Sandy Deeley are local elite racers who have tons of experience on the local and national race scene. They just don't sell SUP they live it. They offer lessons, rentals, and sales.

If you are in the midtown OC area check out OC Sup and Fitness. Owner Dawn Ehman is an elite women's racer, fitness instructor, yoga instructor, SUP instructor. Located at Fager's Island this is a perfect spot for your SUP adventure. Dawn also puts on the Surf Swap Challenge race and the Battle of the Bay. Watch out though, she may be the fastest female SUP racer in the area!! If your interested in SUP Yoga, boot camp etc.. this is the place to go.

If your in the uptown OC area or in lower Delaware than you have to check out Delmarva Board Sport Adventures. Located in Fenwick Island directly in front of Harpoon Hanna's. Delmarva Board Sports is owned and operated by Janis and George Markopoulos, two of the most stoked people you will ever meet. They offer sales, rentals, excursions, as well as windsurfing equipment and lessons.  Want to do SUP Yoga, paddle with the dolphins? This is your place. Their location is hard to beat. If you are in the Lewes, Rehoboth, Dewey Beach area check out East of Maui at either of their 2 locations. They are a full service surf and SUP shop with a great product line and knowledgeable staff. They offer lessons and rentals out of their Lewes shop with easy access to the bay. 302-227-4703.

3rd Annual Stand Up Paddle Annapolis Sup Race

Group paddle / race training 7/8/12

There will be a group paddle / race training tomorrow 7/8/12 at 12pm at Assawoman Wildlife Refuge. Meet at the Sassafras Landing. It will be your first dirt road on the left after you enter the park. It will be hot so bring plenty of water. A decent turnout is expected and it is a great way to meet other paddlers and train for the upcoming races.

Wear your PFD'S!!!

Many people new to stand up paddling may not know what is required equipment on their local waterways. It's a safe bet that a personal flotation device is needed as well as a whistle. Besides being smart to have in many places if you don't have the required PFD it could lead a fine. I like a waist belt PFD like the Stearns Sospenders. It is light weight and doesn't interfere with paddling.

Stand Up Annapolis race 7/14/2012

On July 14, 2012 Stand Up Paddle Annapolis will be hosting their 3rd annual stand up paddle race. The race will be held at Deep Creek Restaurant in Arnold just over the bay bridge. Last year they had over 60 racers so expect an even better turnout this year. Race starts at 9am. Race registration and info can be found at http://supannapolis-race.eventbrite.com/ . Kent Island SUP Race

Another great SUP race today on Delmarva in Kent Island. The Kent Island Outrigger and Canoe Club held its annual race at the Kent Island Yacht Club. The SUP race had it's usual surfboard, 12'6, and 14' divisions with a 3 and 6 mile course. A very strong turnout of paddlers was complemented by a beautiful day and great venue. Congrats to Ocean City, MD locals Ron Gossard for finishing 1st in the Elite 6 mile race and Dawn Ehman for finishing 2nd in the women's Elite 6 mile. Thanks to the Kent Island Outrigger and Canoe club for putting on another great event. Next area race will be in Annapolis in July.
